Why “All Night” by Big Boi Deserves Your Attention
“All Night” is without a doubt a front to back banger. You could be forgiven for not knowing that Big Boi’s latest album was released last Friday as we also got new albums from Young Thug, 2 Chainz, Fleet Foxes, and Lorde. “Could” being the operative word in this sentence because I don’t want to know you if you don’t check out this song from Boomiverse. We recently discussed our songs of the summer on the Doin’ Our Best podcast but unfortunately this song had not been revealed at the time of recording. Luckily, I can rectify that right here.
The lyrics are standard hip-hop love/attraction song fare. “If it’s all right, I wanna kick it with you all night,” isn’t exactly the most inventive hook to a song but it works perfectly as the playful refrain. Backed by the jaunting piano on the beat this song is perfect for the summer. It is physically impossible to not attempt to move your body in some rhythm to the infectious happiness as the opening beat skips through your ears. The beat clearly takes a page out of DRAM’s playbook of upbeat piano as the focal point of the song and it’s something that I’m never going to get sick of when it’s executed as well as it is here.
As a whole, Boomiverse is as up and down as his previous solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. Big Boi is constantly trying new things and is completely unafraid of experimenting with new sounds and collaborators which can give his solo projects an uneven feel. Sir Lucius Left Foot, his first solo album, is one of my favorite rap albums of all time and it’s disappointing that he hasn’t been able to recapture that magic throughout an entire album since then. Outkast as a whole has been a summer song staple since 1996 and Big Boi continues to add songs that should stay in rotation for years to come.
