Many of us are socialized to internalize. It begins with our family secrets. As we grow older, we are encouraged by the world around us. I can’t tell you how many times as a child I watched as an adult looked at me, then at my parents and said “wow, he’s so well behaved.” Simply because I was quiet.

That’s all I needed to do to be considered a good kid in the eyes of others. They didn’t know if I did my homework. They didn’t know if I made my bed…but Pierce was good because he was quiet.

My mother once told me a story that after I was born and brought home, my dad stood over my crib and looked down at me. She asked him “what are you thinking?” He said, “I’m wondering what he will think of me.”

Father’s Day isn’t typically a day that I paid much attention to. The days that tend to be the most heartfelt for me are April 30th (my father’s birthday) and August 11th (my father’s death). For context, just think of how many times you have heard it, then consider that my nana (refuses to be called “grandma”) spent her career cooking for priests for 30 years and raised her family to be devout Catholics. Yeah, I…

The topic of social pressure has come up in the news quite a bit lately, alongside the coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite us being physically quarantined and isolated, we’re ironically as connected as ever before, and social pressure is persisting on both ends of the spectrum. On one hand, we hear about ‘good social pressure’-like people making sure their friends and family are washing their hands, staying inside, and not touching their face (this last one is pretty damn tough for me). On the other end is ‘bad social pressure’-an example would be those who refuse to take this…
