Mantra for the Week

We say “less is more”, but what we all want, if we are honest, is more. We want more of whatever we have.

Sadhguru puts it, cynically, ‘if you have handbags, you would want more handbags, if you have money, you’d want more money, if you have love, you’d want more love, and so on..’

This is who we are.

It takes discipline to live with less and even more to design with less. Just imagine of the next generation smartphone came out with less features, we’ll be furious.

But does the future always need to be the present + X?

Does innovation always rely on addition?

One of my design lecturers always used to say, in just about every class:

“Simplicity is not always the best, but the best is always simple”

Creating with less is a constant discipline. Subtracting, rather than adding, an art.

The question being, how much can you take away, before you lose the essence?
