Bonobo Gong: The story of a fun side project

Here is how bonobo gong looks like !

Last year, we launched with two friends an app called Bonobo Gong.

The concept is really simple: when something you love happens, you simply press a gong on the app and then all your friends receive the big sound of a gong on their phone. Pretty fun! (and annoying for your friends)

We launched the app on both Android and iOS, the goal was mostly to have fun with our friends. We wanted a way to mass-send a gong to all our friend. It’s like Yo, but you don’t choose who you are sending the gong to.

The launch

The first week we launched Bonobo Gong, someone posted us on Product Hunt! Unfortunately, the product stayed on the “upcoming” page and never went on the front page.

6 months after

Today, we have 486 users on the app who sent more than 8 000 gongs in just 6 months!

Here are the top 50 Bonobo Gong users, ordered by the number of gongs sent, with the username and the number of gongs sent for each user!

To conclude

Bonobo Gong is still running, and we are still using it with our friends but we are all busy with others projects and are no longer working on it.

Otherwise, it was a great experience to build this MVP in a couple of days, and publish it “in the real world”! And the app was pretty fun to use ;)
