Can we say for sure that he is lost? He is jailed, that’s it. He can prepare for a new life from within, read and make anyway a difference in the future. Isn’t there a way to tell the story in other words than as a story ending there, period. Even the sentence I’ve lost a student could be questionned. Not so sure. Aren’t you still his teacher even if he can no longer attend your class? Maybe you will remain in his mind his teacher up to the end of his life. Easy to say from abroad and knowing little about the chances given in your country to former detainees, but I wish you not to lose hope on that young guy and I recommed you to persist with sending him books. Maybe you could even arrange some solidarity network surrounding him, others people who would send him books and tell him how strongly they believe in his ability to overcome and take his part in the development of the society some day. Maybe his former mates, or at least some of them could take a few lessons on what happened and about the part they have taken in the disastrous outcome. Who knows ? This could emerge not through accusations and inquiries, but through questions asked to them about their own way of telling this story.
