Since the slightest deviation from the original Bitcoin protocol specification can deeply modify the properties of the network, the “blockchain” noun needs to be qualified as “Bitcoin blockchain” or “Ethereum blockchain” or whatever altcoin is in question.

A crucial difference between a blockchain and a traditionnal database (relational DB or key/value store, etc) stems from the fact that the unique qualities of a blockchain can only be revealed with its deployment on a network. Hence the necessity to prepend the network name.
