I just finished HOMELAND 5 in Tokyo
Since it wasn’t “catching up Season 5 in one day” program, I’ve had to wait for a week to see the every episodes. It tears me every time when a story of a week ended but finally I finished it. It was the show that excites me in the real way and it always makes me think “who can come up with such script?”. Also it was the one of contents that closely faces and draws the current situation in the real world. That scares me. I mean what is happening in Europe right now. Boy, the drama is almost not a fiction. It’s now going on.
It was October 4, 2015, that Season 5 starts, according to Wikipedia. So what incidents occurred around the program on the air?
- Jan 7, 2015, Paris, France — “Charlie Hebdo” incident
- Nov 13, 2015, Paris, France
- March 22, 2016, Brussels, Belgium
The topic in Season 5 was hacking/data leak and terror in Europe. Before and after the premier, more and more terrorisms were happened. So the topic must be definitely hot and captured thousands of attention in US and Europe, I guess.
I also guess that some of people blame the producers about the content of HOMELAND, since it has been always controversial from the beginning and Season 5 isn’t an exception, although I can’t hear such discussion, living in Tokyo. I’m interested in it. Please give me the references, if you do me a favor.
What I think is, broadcasting such controversial theme with maximum delicacy should be encouraged. Although concerning audience must be highly considered, you should keep supplying such drama. People want to know what’s happening or at least they want to feel they understood it in their mind. When you stop creating controversial stories, people start feeling anxiety and scared and that leads a bad and distorted misunderstanding among some of people.
In Japan, there was a mass-killing up close to Tokyo, this July. A guy who used to work at a disability person facility attacked the place and killed almost 20 people. I don’t know what the man thinks. I don’t know why the man had to commit that awful case. It’s really scary. Besides (it’s not happened yet, but), if someone naive gets affected by the case and makes another negative action, that would be the worst. I don’t jump to conclude “if there is a drama drawing the case above, nothing bad ever happens”. But I feel if there is a drama describing people involved in such unbelievable case, it eases tension of people and decreases possibility of the next similar perpetration.
I could also say that the case above in Japan happened because of much news of terror attacks every day and less stories/explanations. Sadly, Most Japanese don’t know why the terrors in Europe happen and increase these days. And there is not enough information of it. People who know it are very limited. Thus only ambiguous anxiety and uncomfortableness are left in our mind, because of media information. This is not good. People have to learn or at least touch some stories that relief them as much as it can. Japan needs more controversial stories, that’s what I’m thinking.
Anyway no doubt that HOMELAND performs a part of the role widely. In the way, I thank the producers. The guys are doing great. I hope the next series eases people in a good way too.
