Why Steve Komphela had a poor start at Chiefs?

  1. Chiefs took part in two Cup finals and lost them both. Uncharacteristic of Kaizer Chiefs, who are traditionally known as Cup specialists.
  2. Lost both to Pirates and Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs' first league defeat came at the hands of Orlando Pirates, and the second cup they contested was against Sundowns, which they lost 3-1.
  3. Kaizer Chiefs have had the worst start to the League in recent times, slumping to fourth position on the log at December break, winning 5 matches of 12, amassing 21 points. But they are 5 points behind pacesetters Sundowns. Not bad!
  4. Players lost in the picture. Players such as Siyanda Xulu, Bongani Ndulula, George Maluleka, Reinelwe Letsholonyane, David Zulu, Itumeleng Khune are either picking up injuries in the most suspect of ways, or suddenly reduced to cameo roles. Others have been lost altogether from starting lineup or team sheets.
  5. Leaky defence. The defence is uncharacteristically generous this campaign, letting in an average two goals per match. Clean sheets are few and far between. The central defensive pairing changes constantly, where at first it was Eric Mathoho/Xulu, then Mathoho/Ivan Bukenya; and of late it’s Mathoho/Gourdinho. The coach does not seem to have his tried and tested central pairing. Why is Xulu demoted?
  6. Misfiring strikers. Although during Stuart Baxter’s tenure the goal scoring responsibility was spread out over the whole team, Baxter had the stern, bulky Kingston Nkhatha who was used as a target man, a role in which he excelled. Nkhatha would receive the ball with his back to the goal, release such runners as Lebese, Bernard Parker, Sphiwe Tshabalala and Letsholonyane with a clear view to goal. No wonder they shared the scoring role amongst them majorably. Under Komphela, there is either Abraw, Manqele, Zulu (when he played), Ndulula (on rare occasions), and Siphelele Mthembu. All of them have been paltry.
