
A six-year-old manager
He was my student for about 10 months, and our classes consisted of watching movies and playing games in English. Yes, children also learn languages by playing.
I discovered his managing qualities for the class when he started crying because I refused to do what he wanted. Since his crying without tears did not move me, I offered to call his dad and finish the class in that very moment. He opened big eyes to look at me and moved his head from right to left. I asked him what he wanted, and his words went short to express what his eyes said: he wanted to be heard; he had an idea to carry out, and idea with strength of its own.
From then on, we started the class discussing the rules, he would normally tell me what to do and how to do it; I followed his ideas and tried to listen to his intentions beneath the words, because I wanted to see how far he wanted to go, how much he wanted to risk and how happy he became when he achieved his goals.
My young student loved his ideas, just like the adult managers do.
