I Don’t Need no Stinkin’ GPS

Drivers who rely on GPS will always have to use GPS. It becomes a crutch. I learned my way around the city as fast as I could to avoid using the phone, which I find to be a major hinderance.

On the topic of threats from passengers, I was trained in taxi school how to deal with certain situations like getting out of the car, keeping a spare wallet to give to a potential robber. Bad things can happen anywhere. But I feel safer knowing my dispatcher is on the other end of the radio and he can summon help immediately and that there are other drivers on the road who have my back.

Cab drivers are not adverse to technology. We use apps to keep tabs on each other and what’s going on in the city. It’s like I have a Bat Signal if anything ever goes wrong. With Lyft and Uber, I was on my own.
