To me, open means inclusion. It means that those who may not have the same privileges as others have equal access to ‘stuff’, particularly to education. Open means crossing boundaries and borders. People from different places, backgrounds interacting and accessing information and knowledge and ultimately co-producing knowledge. Social media is a prime example of how openness can transcend physical barriers and how information, data and knowledge is created and shared outside of traditional learning models. But there are challenges; for me, there are ethical elements of open that need to be considered, provoked. As for criteria, there are social and global considerations to take into account. Responsibility for what we produce, publish and how we do that without detriment to others.
