Fancy Women Bike Ride — 24/09/2017

Fancy Women Bike Ride (Süslü Kadınlar Bisiklet Turu) is a women cycling event typically held on the World Car Free Day every year; its purpose is meeting at in the city center and cycle as a group on the main roads of the city.

The event originated for the first time in 2013 in Izmir (Turkey) by the end of 2016, the event was being held in over 30 cities around Turkey.

Fancy Women Bike Ride has been described as “annual ride of women cyclists reclaiming the streets and asking for urban cycling policies”, and characterized as a social movement.

This annual event is seen as a “celebration” and not as a protest or organized demonstrations.

Fancy Women Bike Ride is a kind of critical mass combined with cycle chic movement.

Fancy Women Bike Ride will take place in Izmir/Turkey for the 5th year in a row on September 24th, 2017.


Everything started with a simple call from Sema Gür (collage teacher), inviting her friends to cycle in the city center with their fancy dresses and flower covered bicycles. The first event in 2013, took place on World Car Free Day in Izmir and there were more than 500 women.

Now there is a huge community of women who promote cycling from peer-to-peer in Turkey. With the contribution of volunteer work of the women, Fancy Women Bike Ride will be organized in more than 50 cities on the same day at the same time with the same message: “for the freedom of cycling we want cycling-safe-cities”.


Fancy Women Bike Ride is organized by Sema Gür and Pinar Pinzuti with the local support of the volunteers in all around Turkey. The message is same for all cities “Freedom of Cycling”.

The routes of the bike rides are decided and published by the leaders of the groups. In order for the event to function, the only requirement is a sufficient women cyclists to create a group ride dense enough to occupy the streets of the city.

Fancy Women Bike Ride events vary in number of participants. For example, many small cities have 50 cyclists, while in big cities like İstanbul, Ankara, Antalya have more than 500 cyclists.

Izmir Fancy Women Bike Ride attracts more than 3000 women cyclists every year.


The cycling route for the event is easy and short and the tour participation conditions are:

1- You have to be a woman

2- You should dress fancy

3- You should come with a fancy bicycle

4- Able to cycle max. 10km/h

5- Be able to wave your hand while cycling
