Jim Henson surrounded by his creations | The Jim Henson Company

[This story was originally published in The Stony Brook Press]

Whether they’ve watched “Sesame Street” as a kid or seen Kermit the Frog across their social media feeds, almost everyone knows the Muppets. They’ve been around for more than fifty years and made their lasting impact on TV and movies known. The entire cultural phenomenon can be traced back to one man: Jim Henson. He was gentle, soft-spoken and preferred to stay out of the spotlight, but through the years his legacy continues to shine and many want to tell others about him.

One such person bringing the works of…

(Oreos please sponsor me.)

If there’s one thing people need to know about me, it’s that I have an obsession with Oreos. I have a particular goal to eat every single one of the 50+ Oreo flavors out there, and while what’s ranked below isn’t an exhaustive list, it’s certainly a good start. A good Oreo is one that’s easy to eat, a good balance of sweet and savory and, most importantly, a cookie that I want to eat again. In the spirit of an even playing field, all cookies were eaten without milk. Fun fact about Oreos: they’re vegan…

The 2016 presidential election was a nervewracking time to be a Christian. The very fate of the country seemed to be hanging in the balance, and a choice was presented to the people: choose the party of God, or give the country to the morally corrupt. Dedicated church members called their friends, desperately urging them to vote and making sure they would reach out to their friends too. From the pulpits, pleas made by pastors urged whoever was listening to take responsibility for…

Los Santos: The Beautifully Broken City

When you think about relaxing games, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V hardly seems like it would make that list. For me, the game sits at the top. Grand Theft Auto left me with such a profound sense of serenity and appreciation for the world around me, something no other game has ever done.

When I bought a PlayStation 4, I knew I had a lot of games to catch up on. Grand Theft Auto V, six years out from its release, still comes highly recommended and it was on sale, so I bought it. I started full of optimism and…

The weather on March 6th, 2019 in New York City was a blisteringly windy 26 degrees. For commuters coming out the Union Square subway station, the last thing they expected to be greeted by volunteers in Buzzfeed branded gloves and hats handing out newspapers. Buzzfeed went physical.

From 5:30am to 1:30pm, “Buzzfeed Newsies” handed out almost 20,000 free copies of a twelve-page paper in Union Square, Herald Square and Penn Station, three of the busiest subway stations in the Manhattan.

Social Media! Nice!

If you’ve ever been on the website Twitter dot com you know it’s the place for one thing and one thing only: Epic marketing. Here’s some brands that are so hilarious, they deserve all of our hard earned money.

Netflix

Netflix is an online media company. They produce and show high quality on-demand entertainment. They changed the industry of media forever. I’ve grown up along side this mega corporation. They’re a friend, even family. And the one thing I love to do is joke around with my friends about communities I’m apart of in a non offense way!

It’s ok…

John Linnel (Left) and John Flansburgh (Right) on stage

You should listen to They Might Be Giants. Do their two Grammys entice you? Maybe you’ve even heard some of their music: They’ve composed the theme from “Malcolm in the Middle,” and “The Daily Show,” “Hot Dog” from “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” and that one song you heard in History class “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”. Maybe I could persuade you by saying they’re an alternative band from around here in Brooklyn or that they’ve been actively making and releasing music since 1986 and have 20 albums to their name. …
