The Inevitability of Change

In this world, we are born, we experience change, and then we die. These are three undeniable truths about life that are so obvious, they are forgotten. I find it odd that so many people claim to “fear the unknown” when in fact, most of our lives are exactly that. We have these three solid facts and the rest of life is “the unknown”. Given this, I have to wonder, are there people who walk around in constant fear instead of embracing the excellent opportunities that come with each new day? How many people living in fear are missing out on experiences and opportunity because of fear of the unknown or ignorance to the inevitability of change?

You are only promised the here and now. So my question to anyone reading this is, “What are you doing right now with the knowledge that tomorrow could never come?”. Are you living the life that you want to? If not, are you working towards living that life or simply saying, “someday...”? There are only so many “somedays” and if you don’t attack today and every day with full force to get what you want, those dreams will never come true. Dreams and goals are not handed out. If they were, they wouldn’t be worth anything and the quality of our lives would be greatly reduced. Dreams and goals are achieved if and when a person puts in the work that most aren’t willing to. That’s why so few people are living their dream lives. In order to be successful, you have to work relentlessly and not only believe wholeheartedly in your goals and your dreams but also believe in yourself just as much. Will it be hard? Yes. Will you have doubts along the way? Absolutely. Will there be trials, mistakes, “failures”, and frustrations? Without a doubt. If it were easy, everybody would be rich and successful. That’s enough amateur motivational psychobabble for now but enough to get us back to the subject of change and why understanding change is so important to success and happiness.

I want you to take a second and think back to your childhood. When life was worry free and full of wonder and magic. What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you feel like you were limited by your surroundings? Did you feel like you had to settle? (Aside from your parents or parent not buying you everything you ever asked for, of course.) What did the world look like to you? Now, fast forward to the present day. How much of that wonder and magic still exists? Do you love what you do now? Are you where you thought you would be? Is life what you thought it would be? If you answered “no” to any or all of these questions, then I am forced to ask the question, “why?”. The answer, in my opinion, is that things have changed. Something inside of you changed. The world around you changed. The way you perceive the world around you changed. EVERYTHING has changed. However, change is not really the issue because as the title of this article says, it is inevitable and we know this whether we know that we know it or not. It is the way that we handle and deal with change that truly is the determining factor of the overall effect that it will have on us. Going back to children, the one thing that they have over most adults is a sense of wonder that comes from each moment to the next. They are constantly discovering and experiencing new things. Learning and growing their minds daily. In other words, they are embracing change. So why have we lost this as adults? Everything is still constantly changing around us. Every day still brings new opportunities. With every day also comes the potential of new experiences both good and bad but each a learning experience none the less. Why have we accepted a mundane lifestyle and mediocrity as the norm?

If you’ve made it this far, hopefully, my words have caused you to do a little soul searching and thinking. Everything around us will continue to change whether we like it or not. Fear and worry will never change the outcome of anything. Understanding change, embracing it, and taking action on the opportunities presented by change ABSOLUTELY will if you commit and put in the work. Now prepare yourselves for some (more) redundancy… The most amazing thing about change is that it is never too late to change until it is too late. The only expiration date on change, goals, and dreams, is YOUR expiration date. In other words, if you feel like you need to make changes, start making them today because all that is certain are the three truths at the beginning of this article and RIGHT NOW.
