Why Did Hillary Lose
Right after the election, Hillary blamed FBI director James Comey for her loss. Now she is blaming the “fake news” allegedly fed by the Russian government. But the real reason for her loss is the fake reality she lived in with the help of the liberal media.
She thought she had a firewall in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. She thought she was on the offensive. She thought she would have a landslide victory as anticipated by all the liberal journalists.
She thought she had African Americans and the Hispanics. She thought she had the woman vote. She was so confident that she did not bother to talk about what she is going to do as the president. She made the election as a history making, glass ceiling breaking, once a lifetime feminist movement. Her campaign slogan is “I am with her”. It is all about her, not the voters.
But the reality in those states is different. Having a woman as the Commander in Chief is simply not as important as jobs.
On the surface, things are not bad. The unemployment rate is below 5%. Obama’s job approval rate is above 50%. Running as the third term of Obama administration, Hillary seemed a sure win. As a matter of fact, Las Vegas put her odds of winning above 90% even in the early evening of the election day.
But looking deeper, you would find a different reality. Many working class whites had lost jobs in the Great Recession. Some found jobs again, but at a much lower pay. Many simply gave up looking for jobs. They were suffering. But no one paid any attention to them except Donald Trump.
The direct reason is free trade. Normally Democrats are against and Republicans are for free trade as it mainly benefits the rich. But this year, things are different.
Hillary has always supported free trade. This is one of the reasons that she had the backing of Wall Street. NAFTA is a signature trade agreement of Bill Clinton. Hillary was also an advocate of TPP before disowning it during the primary against Bernie Sanders.
Donald Trump is not always an opponent of free trade. As a businessman, he has benefited from it. But he saw the damaging effect on the workers. Because of free trade agreements, many American companies moved manufacturing to China or Mexico. Due to the failure of our public education system, many blue collar whites were left without good jobs. During the Great Recession, American middle-class shrunk with two opposite movements. Some moved up to the upper-class while many moved down to the lower-class.
Trump reached out to those unemployed and under-employed whites. He became their champion. He gave them a voice and a platform. His plain talk and political un-correctness made him one of them.
Some Democrats saw this coming. Michael Moore even made a documentary about it. But the Clinton Campaign and the liberal media totally ignored it. To the liberal elites, the blue collar whites are their punching bags. They make fun of them and brush them aside as racists and bigots. Hillary even called them “a basket of deplorables”.
But this time, they revolted. They organized into a political force. They brought down the mighty Clinton Machine. They made a fool out of the liberal elites. They pushed Trump to victory against Wall Street, the liberal media, and both parties’ establishment.
