I’m a huge Dodgers/Fernando fan, but I think Kirk Gibson would fit this criteria better.

Fernando has 36 WAR as a Dodger; that’s #16 on their all-time list. Why retire his number and not the number of these guys:

#21 Bob Welch, 33 WAR

#17 Steve Garvey, 36 WAR

#14 Gil Hodges, 44 WAR

#13 Orel Hershiser, 44 WAR

#12 Ron Cey, 47 WAR

#8 Willie Davis, 54 WAR

#6 Dazzy Vance, 58 WAR

#5 Zack Wheat, 59 WAR

All the Dodgers’ retired numbers are of Hall of Famers except Jim Gilliam. I realize that most people these days don’t give a hoot about old players, but I’m not most people and I’d honor the HoFers Wheat and Vance long before getting to Fernando. I’d put at least Hershiser ahead of him too.
