Mission Reveals Over 5 Trillion Pieces Of Plastic Littering The Ocean

People seem to forget that everything moving through our oceans — one way or the other — is coming back moving through us… with highly dangerous consequences for our health and planet.

A project called ‘The Ocean Cleanup’ has been on a mission to develop advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic and correctly measure the trash and garbage patches.

Now they have completed an aerial reconnaissance scan of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, one of the 5 gigantic trash vortices, to better understand the seriousness of the problem ocean plastic has become. The preliminary results are far worse than anyone expected.

CEO and company founder Boyan Slat announced at a press conference in Mountain View, California, that the organization spotted over 1000 large pieces of plastic debris… in a mere 2 hours.

The Aerial Expedition is using a modified C- 130 Hercules aircraft and a whole variety of scanning equipment based on the latest lidar technology

They reported their initial findings, confirming the expected overabundance of plastic waste between the size of .5 meter or 1.5 feet and larger in the ocean garbage patch. While the crew only flew across the northern boundary of the patch for 2.5 hours, they still spotted over one…
