Ooho! The edible water blob destined to rid the world of plastic bottles

By now, most people have realized that the ocean’s health is our health. Many attempts were made to tackle the ever-growing issue as we continue to dump more than 8 million tons of plastic into the precious vast blue every year.

Now a small team of entrepreneurs from the Skipping Rocks Lab at Imperial College, London are literally trying to liquidate plastic bottles and started a crowdfunding campaign in an effort to bring consumable water bottles to mass-markets. It raised over $1m in just 3 days!

The bottle, to be honest, is unlike anything you’ve seen before and its name Ooho! represents the spherical kind of water-blob encapsulated in a thin, tasteless, edible membrane. The idea stems from packaging culinary liquids, where potential fluids like ice underwent so-called spherification for quite some time now.

So, it starts with the ice ball that is put into a mix of brown algae and calcium chloride to form the membrane. Once the inner ice starts to melts, the sphere is filling up with water or any kind of suitable liquid. Even though the membrane looks pretty similar to common silicone implants it is…
