Xavier Dolan is a young Canadian director who recently won Cannes’ Jury Prize for his new film Mommy, tied with Godard. He has directed six movies and Tom at the Farm is his second to last.
It tells us the story of a small, countryside family who just lost a 25 year old son. Tom (Dolan) is the son’s (secret) boyfriend. He shows up for the ceremony, making the mom happy to see her son had friends but also making her other violent son mad because he knows what’s up. Tom then becomes helpful to the farm while trying to deal with the family’s abusive brother.
As mentioned, the thrill of having Tom at the Farm is all the lies they tell the mom. Well, the brother tells the mom. Even a make up girlfriend shows up.
I’ve nothing to complain about Dolan’s filmmaking. I was expecting a family drama but got a disturbing and scary thriller and that left me pleased. His acting was also decent. I was surprised, can’t wait to see more of his work.
