There are a handful of High Net Worth Individuals (over 50 billion USD) who with a little effort could buy all BTC and altcoins — right? The US spends around 600 billion a year on ‘defense’, spending 150bn to buy up bitcoin is doable no? What I’m saying is if in a cost benefit analysis they work out that buying up most bitcoin is profitable then could they not indeed do that (maybe I missing something). For instance throw enough money and force of law against torrents and you can severely limit — think of the Great Firewall of China — with enough manpower and political will then just about anything is reversible. The real battleground is public opinion surely and not the codebase. Think of Iran and stuxnet — their system was virtually offgrid and STILL got taken down. The ONLY way for Iran to have a nuclear program IMHO (not that I’m in support of it) was if the US believed that it would serve US interests. Hence I subscribe to the work of Gene Sharp — whose basic point is that a strategic appeal to public opinion is what works and elicits long term change. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Dictatorship_to_Democracy
I think you have some amazing points about first mover and hash power and the global nature. I’m just trying to work out the best way forward. In gene sharps view its not who has the most power, but who has the most goodwill. If you have the goodwill of the people (armed services, public servants, general public) then thats what real legitimacy stems from. Dictatorships usually fall because they lack this goodwill. They are brittle. Goodwill is resilient long term. In this example Iran would have gotten further by using its efforts to win ‘goodwill’ than it did by trying to assert power and authority.
I do believe we live in oppressive times much as you do — so give my thinking some consideration — for instance in a Police State you have each of these inalienables turned on it head — a ‘freedom is slavery logic’ if you will that would read something like:
- We are here to ensure that people are harmed — INCARCERATION, SURVEILLANCE, INCOME INEQUALITY, POOR ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE/ EDUCATION, LACK OF JOB SECURITY
- We are here to ensure that people are threatened (AS ABOVE)
- We are here to ensure that people do what we say (aka cannot can live as they best see fit) SURVEILLANCE, DRACONIAN ‘LAWS’, MEDIA CENSORSHIP + NEWS MANIPULATION
