We could argue what’s a subfield of what until the cows come home. Here’s Oren Etzioni — founder of the Allen Institutes — statement in Wired on how deep learning (a form of ML) fits into AI:
“Deep learning is a subfield of machine learning, which is a vibrant research area in artificial intelligence, or AI. Abstractly, machine learning is an approach to approximating functions based on a collection of data points.”
Both ML and AI are buzzwords. It’s good to be skeptical of hype, but also pragmatic in how we’ll apply our people and tech in these areas.
