How To Become A Music Composer
Do you want to be a music composer when you grow up? Me too!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mats Piyasiri and I am a Swedish music composer and producer making Epic & Cinematic Orchestral music.
What to expect from my blog
I have only been writing music in this genre for a year but in that year I have learnt so much. I will share my knowledge you need to become a music composer. A lot of the information about the music business on the internet is written by bands, Djs, Rappers and so on. I have often had trouble myself trying to implement their advice, techniques and tactics to my own music. Therefore I want to share my knowledge with fellow composers out there. Some of the information will work for all kinds of different genres but some will be more genre specific.
Why I started writing music
I have always been interested in movies with big film scores by composers like Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Brian Tyler, Howard Shore and Alan Sylvestri. They inspired me to write my own music and with the modern orchestral libraries available today the possibility to make high end quality orchestral music has advanced enormously in the last 10 years. Today the end product is pretty much ready for the industri and it’s possible to make high quality music on a very small budget. I am a pianist so I use a keyboard and Orchestral Libraries in my computer to create my music.
Streaming & custom music
My music production is divided into two parts. The first one is writing music that I release on streaming services like YouTube & Spotify for people to listen to and enjoy and the second part is writing custom made music for projects like commercials and video projects. Every piece of music that I write (that I think is good enough) is released online.
My work as a composer for the foundation “Childhood” run by Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, has been very rewarding for me both as a composer and as a person. My song “Better Childhood” has been played on the biggest TV station in Sweden TV4 and at the Stockholm Open in Tennis to name a few. It’s a honor to be a sponsor and supporter of the Childhood Foundation helping them in their noble cause preventing sexual abuse of children around the world.
Meet my… eh… Team!
I’m a true example of DIY. I write, compose, produce, mix, master, make the album covers and do the marketing myself. In other words I do everything myself. Some things I’m better at than others but I’m learning and I’d like to believe that I’ve come quite far in my first year as a composer.
Goals and expectations
My goal for 2022 was to get 100k plays on Spotify which I was lucky to achieve in September 2022 on my first album released in April 2022. One of my goals in 2023 is to help other composers and musicians to learn more about the music business.
