On one hand, Covid19 has shaken the world and on the other, in response, the human race has come together, showing unprecedented unity and integrity fighting the disease. The virus has taken down a lot of nations, the economy and affected millions of lives. Healthcare workers globally have set an example of courage and sacrifice. Social media is filled with stories that makes one proud of what we can achieve together as humans. And the stories we will remember for generations to come.

In these times, countries have taken different approaches, based on their demographical, socio-economical, geographical challenges, to fight and contain the disease. Some countries, and their leadership, have done extremely well in containing the virus and some are learning the lesson and implementing changes accordingly. Canada — a country of 37 million — has seen approx 50K cases, of which 38% have been recovered and approx 2800 (5.6%) have unfortunately died. Overall, Canada has done a tremendous job of containing the virus spread and financially assisting people of all categories. I want to highlight the leadership and perception lesson that I believe has played a significant role in containing the virus and keeping us united.

In early March, Sophie G Trudeau traveled to the U.K. When she returned she complained of symptoms that indicated Covid19 contraction. Following day, on March13 her test results came to be positive. Since that day, on an emergency level, Justin Trudeau was moved to Rideau Cottage and was advised to live in self-isolation. As a leader of the country, he listened to the scientists and doctors, setting himself as an example for all to follow. And since that day Justin Trudeau addresses the nation from just outside of the cottage, where he stands alone behind the podium that reads “Canada/Coronavirus”.

I fundamentally believe that the above image of Justine Trudeau is anchored in each Canadian’s mind where he stands alone behind the podium and addresses the nation. There is not an army of people to the side of his, neither he is shaking hands or giving hugs to people on camera. He comes prepared for the session, answers the questions, uplifts nations spirits, and wishing good luck goes back to work. No drama. On the other hand, its the sentiment that if the virus can sicken Prime minister’s wife, it can happen to common people. it just brought the gravity of the issue in peoples’ minds. This was the trigger to seriously follow social isolation. On March 28, after spending 14 days in isolation, Sophie Trudeau was given the green signal from the medical staff; prime minister and family still chose to stay in the isolation, carrying on a normal workday to day work and setting themselves as an example for the nation.

The above image (and the videos) reinforces the idea of social isolation in every Canadian’s mind. Mind you, he is choosing to address the nation in outdoors, where one is more likely to get the virus than in their own homes. There is an old saying ‘the subjects are the reflection of King’s character’. If the king is just, so will be the subjects and if the king is corrupt it will reflect in the subjects’. I believe among all the other right decisions that the prime minister’s office has taken, this one stands out for me as he led the nation by example. And this is what I wanted to highlight in this article.

The numbers mentioned above speak for themselves. And this probably wouldn’t have happened if Sophie wouldn’t have contracted the disease in the first place. I am very glad that all in Justins’ and Sophie’s family are doing fine now and I wish a speedy recovery to all the people who have contracted the disease. The battle is not over yet. Lets stay united and strong.

Stay Safe!
