My Year End Movie Quick Review- 2017
Inspired from Palash, I decided to rate all the movies which I had seen in the year 2017. The metric used for rating the movies is kept the same:
Engaging (40%)- It refers to how impactful / engaging the film is in the short term. This rating was given on the day I watched the movie
Enduring (60%)- In the long run how much did I absorb it or my willingness to watch it again. This rating was given at year end.
I had set out a target of watching 100 movies ( Hollywood and Foreign Language Movies) over the course of 2017 and at least 10 Bollywood movies. In 2017, I watched 100 movies from Hollywood and Foreign Language and 12 Bollywood movies. I tried to watch movies spanning across a range of genres.
The excel sheet consists of the following columns:
Name of the Film, Year of Release, The date on which I saw the movie, Genre, My Score, IMDB Rating and number of votes- IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes score (Tomatometer) and number of reviews.
While rating the films I did realize that it was a bit unfair method of rating. The movies belonging to Thriller genre received a slightly lower rating as most of the thriller would score well on engaging but they tend to lose out a bit on enduring factor which has a higher weight. So I have decided I’ll separately mention some of the movies from this genre which I liked.
I have captured the spread of watch 112 movies over the spread of the year in the following graph.
In the following chart I have compared my scores with the IMDB Rating.
1st Quadrant comprises of movies which have 7.5+ IMDB Rating and I have given them a score of 4+ out of 5. It comprises of movies which have IMDB Rating and I have also scored them high.
2nd Quadrant comprises of movies which have 7.5+ IMDB Rating and I have given them a score of <=4 out of 5. This segment comprises of movies which have scored a little high on IMDB Rating and slightly low on my axis.
3rd Quadrant comprises of movies which have <=7.5 IMDB Rating and I have given them a score of <=4 out of 5. This segment comprises of movies which have scored a little low on both the axis. However, I’ll mention some of the stands out movies from this section as well.
4th Quadrant comprises of movies which have <=7.5+ IMDB Rating and I have given them a score of >=4 out of 5. According to me these are a set of movies which are a little underrated and definitely are a watch.
I have marked some of the movies in all the quadrants to give an idea of my rating fares as compared to that of IMDB Rating.
Now I will start with my movie recommendation basis the movies which I have seen in 2017 genre wise.
