Smart phones beam pure luminous information into the users brain. As a medium is it like the internet on steroids. The internet is concerned with instantaneous information and leaves no room for quiet reflection and patience. As soon as new information is presented and absorbed a new round of information is presented and then absorbed. There is very limited time for reflection. With smartphones suddenly this is now portable and its cycle of absorption contaminates and spills into other areas. What people do is they walk down the street staring at their phone and then they look up and suddenly there is a million billboard advertising, and these billboards are designed specifically to drawn your attention away and make you forget what you were doing before. Then they look back at their phone and more information is beamed into their brain, they are at complete mercy of the spectacle. This constant flow of information makes people resistant to current levels of shock and require a bigger shock next information cycle. Its why Trump and Clinton can be so popular and so hated at the same time.
Indispensability has been documented across almost all technologies; see Ted Kaczynski. He argues that technology and freedom are completely incompatible.
