Venice Irving — Founder of Happy Teachers

Mrs. Venice Irving from Jamaica, an English teacher and a proud member of the Online School District, Project Jaguar, has been named the Teacher of the Month for February.

Mrs. Irving, one the most exceptional instructors that Pjaguar has seen, was thrusted into the education industry at the found age of 20 years old and just felt teaching was calling her all day, every day.
Mrs. Irving obtained her Graduates Degree in Education, her first Degree in Business Administration and a number of certificates in teaching English as a Foreign Language.

When asked about her teaching Philosophy, Mrs. Irving replied, “ My teaching philosophy is a philosophy that Jamaican government-mandated here, it states — Every child can learn, every child must learn -. There is age-old thinking that some persons just can’t learn, but they have different types of learners, they have visual learners, hands-on learners, and persons who learn from listening. So if we as teachers take the time out to adapt our teaching according to our learner’s needs then I know that every child can learn and every child must learn. …

Have your online students introduce themselves.

“This may sound simple but the first module of my online courses asks students to introduce themselves to their peers. I create a discussion board where students share short introductions with the group either through text or video using Whatsapp or Project Jaguar’s discussion forum tool. I usually try to connect the introductions to course content in some informal way to assess the students’ prior knowledge and experience with the material. More than anything, the introductions are designed to foster open communication amongst students outside of course content. Dalton Spence is our Teacher of the Month for September 2019. This teacher is from Jamaica, while a child took piano lessons and hated how the traditional classroom downplayed the charm of music. He especially hated how certain lessons could make a class feel pointless and tedious. After becoming a teacher at the age of 23 he searched for ways to enhance his teaching using technology. Such as floppy disks, DVDs and software having to do with music but nothing stuck. That is until he introduced iPads and instrument simulation applications in his lessons. “I just wanted students to love music as much as I do.” …

Teaching online can open up interesting opportunities. Always wanted to teach at UCLA but live in Minnesota? Teach online! Want to moonlight but want to keep your full-time job? Teach online! Don’t have your Ph.D. yet but want to teach postsecondary classes? Teach them online!

The “take it anywhere” and adjunct-friendly nature of online teaching means flexibility with where you can teach and get started even if you’re not sure you want to be a professor full time or if you’re still working toward earning your doctorate (and we all know how long that can take).

Of course, there are some drawbacks: being able to take your job everywhere means that work tends to follow you around. And as students get used to the flexibility of logging in whenever they want, you may find yourself grading and offering feedback at odd hours. …
