The Amazing Concept of the Kardashev Scale

Carl Sagan once proposed the question, “What does it mean for a civilisation to be a million years old?”. The civilisation that we are currently in is a few hundred years old and now we a reaching a evolutionary turning point in technological advancement within society.

Michio Kaku is a renowned Japanese American theoretical physicist and futurist, who has proposed many interesting ideas in the development of future technologies throughout the years.

However, one of the most interesting concepts is the Kardashev Scale. Dr Michio Kaku stated that the next 100 years of science will determine ultimately if the human civilisations will survive or get wiped out like our predecessor the dinosaurs, who first appeared in the Triassic period and ruled for millions of years.

Compared to this, one might argue that the dinosaur are better survivors then modern homosapiens who first began to evolve nearly 200,000 years ago.

Kardashev Scale was conceptualised in 1964 by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev, who was so intrigued and fascinated about the possibility of extraterrestrial life forms and civilisation.

Nikolai Kardashev theory has 3 base classes, which are determined by energy consumption that civilisation needs and controls level: Type I , Type II , and Type III .

At the moment our civilisation is type 0, there is a long way a head till we reach our first target of become type 1, however Dr Michio Kaku concludes that with our one going growth of advancement in technology we can reach type 1 with 100–200 years.

A Type I civilisation is when a species who have the ability to fully utilise all the available energy from a neighbouring star, which means gathering and storing energy to meet the civilisation demands of a growing population. Also being Type I civilisation will allow the human race to control and harness all Earth’s energy. Which means we control volcanoes, the weather, and even earthquakes.

Type II civilisation will be able to harness the power of their entire star, with this we will become so powerful that nothing could wipe out a Type II civilisation. For example, if a planetary sized object entered our solar system and is on a collision course with earth. We will have the mechanisms to destroy it out of existence.

When we arrive at Type III level civilisation, we would become galactic traversers with the understanding of everything to do with energy, which in turn result in homosapiens becoming a master race.

We would also have Technologies that is beyond our comprehension such as warp drives and teleporters.

Overall as humans evolve and become an interplanetary species . We will spread our knowledge and technology throughout the consume. If we do not reach these levels we will ultimately be contorted by the environment that we live in and die out like other species before us.
