Joe Bageant’s books “Rainbow Pie” and “Deer Hunting with Jesus” also describe a bracing drop in pride and opportunity for rural citizens. In Rainbow Pie he identifies agribusiness and academia as driving forces that changed life for those folks. I remember two examples… Every small town had a canning business. Those were driven out by ever more restrictions on processing despite having run quite well for decades and decades. Egg farmers would use incandescent light bulbs to inspect eggs. Then rules came in that you had to have hi-tech equipment. Debt followed, etc.
