What I Wanted From My Move to Portland and What I Got
Meryl Williams

Meryl, I am pleading with you — Google “Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.” I lived in Oregon for 8 years fairly recently and only slowly was awareness percolating in the citizenry that we would be well and truly messed over when The Big One comes back. Other than that, people are just mad for Portland right now, it seems, and while I liked a lot of things about it, I didn’t ever entirely “get” it. It seemed like most people had a really romantic relationship with the landscape, but if you’re not the mountain biking type, it’s a little bleak. Rich’s idea is the best one — list things you KNOW you want in life and figure out where those things are highly likely to be. (I am guessing an “earthquake survival kit” will not make the cut.)
