Interesting data, thanks for the article. Hours dedicated to learning is an interesting statistic, I don’t think that’s something you see often. Self-learning is important in programming. There are many programmers that are completely self-taught. This is why I think evaluating skill is more important than someone’s degree. Fortunately many employers seem to recognize this and give their candidates coding tests up front, before the interview. This can useful for filtering out unsuitable applicants who don’t meet the required skill level. But it’s only one step in the process. The technical interview is more thorough and should be the main factor in making a decision.
