The word “genocide” is used far too freely, and it is not clear at all that it is applicable in Assad’s case. No one sane can defend what this regime has done massacring civilians, but the idea that Assad has committed “genocide” of any particular ethnic group is hard to justify. Opponents of the regime do not fit neatly into ethnicity, even if the regime’s most enthusiastic backers are, for good reason, the Alawites.
