Wakefulness and sleep are modulated by the internal biological clock and its impact goes beyond governing sleep and wake processes. It regulates the sleep/wake system and many other functions, such as blood pressure, hormone levels, body temperature, physical performance, alertness, mood and intellectual abilities that fluctuate during the day

So whether it’s the new product launch, startup, exams, business travel, we constantly try to compress our sleep to make more time during the day. Sleep is literally the biggest commodity that has been taken for granted by all of us.

Sleep is almost one third of our lifetime and yet we underestimate its effect on our functioning! We feel that cutting back on a few hours everyday will not have any impact and we are so WRONG!

Sleep affects us physically, emotionally and most importantly cognitivally! Let’s look into what sort of empirical evidence we have on the impact of sleep!

  • Sleep affects every organ system and every diseased state of our body.
  • We now know that cancer cells multiply faster if we are sleep deprived.
  • Recent research states that if you don’t get your optimal sleep, you are most likely to become obese.

Some of the internal metabolic and hormonal impacts of sleep deprivation includes:

  • Slow down your metabolism.
  • Increase in your appetite because your body thinks that it is a state of emergency and thus it needs more food to store and hence the appetite.
  • Increase in the production of stress hormone- Cortisol.
  • Another hormonal impact is imbalance of Ghrelin Hormone which is also known as the hunger hormone. The study shows that there is a 20% increase in the ghrelin hormone while 15% decrease in Leptin hormone (satiety hormone).
  • Because of increased cortisol, the brain craves for more carbohydrates in order to get serotonin to quell that.
