Good read, interesting to hear the perspective.

A bit about the refs thing … either one will indeed work, however in previous posts it has been said that a big source of memory leaks is the use of string refs (I guess the way they map it internally is flaky by nature), so the function ref is preferred. It does feel bulky if you rewrite it every time, but a simple utility higher order function can be written to make implementations of the function ref painless.
