Can Video Games Make You Smarter?

Your first reaction to this is likely just like everyone else. Video Games make you dumber, not smarter, Right? Well recent research has begun to challenge this previously accepted idea.

According to a recent study conducted by Dr. Isabela Granic, Ph.D the American Psychological Association (APA) “New research, suggests such play actually may strengthen a range of cognitive skills such as spatial navigation, reasoning, memory and perception.” Granic continues “This has critical implications for education and career development, as previous research has established the power of spatial skills for achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

Companies for years have been developing games specifically designed to help your memory and cognitive function. That said, even very casual games can have significant benefits in improving cognitive function.

Not all games are created equal…

Research has found that specifically problem/puzzle solving game can improve your brain function and actually raise your IQ. Research conducted by Simone Kühn at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development found that specifically puzzle solving video games “causes increased size in brain regions responsible for spatial orientation, memory formation and strategic planning as well as fine motor skills”

Given the huge growth in popularity of puzzle games such as Candy Crush over the last several years it’s interesting that people likely have been leveling up their brain at the same time they are leveling up in the game.
