Organizers with Lifted Voices say their dream of freedom for Bresha Meadows and all young people behind bars inspired this exhibition. Bresha Meadows of Ohio was just 14 years old when she was incarcerated and faced a charge of aggravated murder for defending herself and her family against the unrelenting abuse of her father. Her case was recently featured in Teen Vogue. Lifted Voices is acting in solidarity with the campaign to #FreeBresha and their demands that she be returned to her family and that all charges against her be dropped.
Statement from Lifted Voices:
On December 1st, it was announced that 15-year-old abuse survivor Bresha Meadows will not be tried as an adult. As heartening as it is to know that Bresha will not spend the rest of her life in prison, we know that we must remain vigilant to see that she is set free. Tried a as juvenile, Bresha could still be incarcerated until she reaches the age of 21.
Since Bresha will not be home for Christmas, and because so many incarcerated children remain caged, we will hold an interactive, online art exhibition on Wednesday, December 14th, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Central Time. We will display artwork created by art therapists, elementary school students and other community members that reflects our dreams of freedom for Bresha — and for all caged children.
We will also be sharing facts and resources related to Bresha’s case, as well as words of support from those advocating for her. We invite all of Bresha’s supporters to join the online action by voicing their support and/or adding their own artwork to the exhibition by using the event’s #FreeBreshaNow hashtag.
We feel it’s important to continue to lift Bresha’s name, even if the weather demands we do it from indoors. Our original December 14th plan to visit the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center will be carried out when weather permits.
