The dataset used was downloaded from the Maven Data Playground. There are other amazing datasets as well, all for one’s practice.

Understanding the data set and knowing what questions to ask are very vital for generating business insights.

A sketch of the questions to be answered from the dataset and worthy visuals that could tell the story efficiently was drawn out.

I created calculated fields, for deeper analysis of the dataset, which include total profit, tied up cost, years since store was established, etc.

Some parameters were also created in order to drill down on the products and locations data. Examples are the (top 5, top 10, top 20) best performing group by profit, best and worst performing stores, etc.

Here are some insights and recommendations I was able to draw out.

  1. There is no significant relationship between the number of years the store has been established and the profit it generates. We have old stores, e.g ones established over more than ten years present in both the top and best performers. Some of our new stores are also currently part of both our best and worst performing stores.
  2. For the downtown locations, toys category currently yields our largest profit. It is highly stocked as well, so as to prevent any out-of-stock situation and profit loss.
  3. Rubik’s cube, under the games category, which currently incurs the third largest cost over the products is not part of our top five or top ten best performers. Tied up cost of inventory is 29,925$. It also had a negative change in profit over the years. Focus on selling this product in Guadalajara, as it is our best performing city for the product. Also bargain with the supplier for a lower cost price to further widen profit being made.

More insights and recommendations are available on the dashboard, where you can also further explore the visuals.
