I remember our conversation well! I’ve always hated the idea that women should have to beg for a 20 percent pay cut when all they really need is the flexibility to take their kids to the doctor. I haven’t found it hard to manage around that, and it’s only getting easier (Slack has changed my life). It’s true that something has to give: the separation between home and family life melted away for me (lots of after-dinner work), and I think we went out even less than you did! But I always felt that the working mothers on my staff set the standard — they didn’t have time for b.s. so they were blazingly efficient.
