In college, pre-Spotify days, I would purchase almost all my music thru the iTunes store and was blissfully ignorant of any potential hacking opportunities. One morning I went to get gas in my car on the way to school and my debit card was declined. No way, I thought, I had just yesterday deposited my TA stipend for the semester, to the tune of about $1,000.00, which to a college kid may as well have been a pot of gold.

I booted up my bank account to discover hundreds of iTunes charges from someone who had hacked my account and downloaded almost a thousand songs. Many were still downloading as I quickly changed my password. Thankfully Apple was understanding and cancelled the downloads, however getting my money back required filing a disupte with the bank. That’ll learn me to a) NEVER use a debit card online and b) NEVER save payment information!
