A Marketplace of Marketplaces of Ideas
Daniel Hemel

Except that limits on free speech are limits on free speech. We want people to experience adversity, especially on college campuses, because exposure to adversity forces people to grow. The development of skills in self-advocacy, and debate, and intellectual challenge are an integral part of the college experience, or should be.

No one is advocating or endorsing a freedom to be callous, insensitive, or deliberately hurtful.

Safe spaces, trigger warnings, and microaggressions are fabrications that have been augmented to the point where the effect is to sanitize the environment. Intellectually, we certainly don’t want the college campus to be hermetically sealed from all provocative material.
