Lincoln? you say. Well, you need to understand that Lincoln had no moral ultimatum with slavery. He said outright that if he would need to accept and preserve the institution of slavery in order to save the union, he would do so.

Of course, he knew that slavery and the nation’s principles were mutually exclusive. Yet he stated unequivocally that he would ‘tolerate’ a complete contradiction of principle if it were necessary to keep the states together.
