This depends. If you are an immigrant that earns a STEM degree in the US; or you have a college education we need you. If you are a poor migrant worker that is likely to require a lot of support from our social systems, we don’t. We really ought to consider ending birthright citizenship in the US. I realize my anecdote is at two extremes, but I think that’s how people are feeling. I have seen anecdotal stories of US high tech workers getting fired because a firm brings in an HB1 worker, but I tend not to believe them. Clearly, the US immigration policy is screwed up and the best way to fix it is late Chicago Booth Prof Gary Becker’s method.
