A Blowout Preventer (BOP) is a device used in oil and gas operations to prevent the uncontrolled release of formation fluids. When drilling a well, high pressure can cause “kicks,” which are essentially dangerous hiccups from the well. Often, these “kicks” lead to “blowouts,” which are incidents of uncontrolled release of gas from an oil or gas well. To prevent these incidents, U.S. BOP testing services are used in multiple wells, which can greatly increase the effectiveness of this fail-safe device.

The U.S. BOP Testing Services vary according to the level of risk, the type of well, and legal requirements. Some preventers are designed to seal an open wellbore, while others are designed to cut through drill pipe. Tests should be conducted on both types of blowout preventers. After each test, the blowout preventer should be checked by a licensed professional. The first step in determining whether a blowout preventer is in good condition is to confirm the manufacturer’s recommendations.

A comprehensive study of subsea blowout-preventer reliability in the North Sea between 1978 and 1989 identified some significant reliability issues. These studies were conducted alongside the impact of BOP failure and malfunctions on rig downtime. The results of these studies have improved significantly in the last few years. The U.S. BOP testing services can now be considered reliable in most cases. However, regular testing is still necessary to ensure that a BOP will be effective when shutting down a well.

U.S. BOP testing services are an integral part of a well’s safety system. A failure of a BOP can have disastrous consequences for the well and the surrounding area. For instance, in March 2022, MR Deepwater Subsea partnered with Offshore Technical Compliance (OTC) to gain access to real-time U.S. BOP testing services approved by the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). The oil explosion that ripped through the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform was caused by an improperly installed blowout preventer. While this device has improved safety, there are still some issues to overcome. A Blowout Preventer is a critical piece of equipment in the drilling process.
