I'm sure you've all heard of ChatGPT by now. However, you might not know the history of the software.

When and How was ChatGPT founded.

ChatGPT (Also Known As GPT) was created by Open AI. Well then who founded Open AI? Well 10 People Founded Open AI.

Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba.

Open AI was founded in 2015. Microsoft backed up Open AI by investing 1 Billion Dollars in 2019 and a 10 Billion Dollar investment in 2023. Surprisingly, Elon Musk and San Altman are the initial board members.

ChatGPT was released into the public on November 30, 2022. ChatGPT is run by the software GPT.

What is GPT?

ChatGPT is run by the software GPT (which was also created by Open AI) .GPT is a commercially available software, hence why you can find knockoffs on the Apple Store Or the Google Play Store.

(Please Note, This next part is heavily taken from Forbes’s Article about GPT)

GPT started off at GPT 1. GPT 1 was created in 2018 4 years before ChatGPT was released. GPT-1 demonstrated the power of unsupervised learning in language understanding tasks, using books as training data to predict the next word in a sentence.

GPT 2 was created in 2019 3 years before ChatGPT was released. It showcased a dramatic improvement in text generation capabilities and produced coherent, multi-paragraph text. But due to its potential misuse, GPT-2 wasn’t initially released to the public. The model was eventually launched in November 2019 after OpenAI conducted a staged rollout to study and mitigate potential risks.

GPT 3 is the most popular version of ChatGPT Since it is public, and it's the default software for ChatGPT. Released in 2020, its advanced text-generation capabilities led to widespread use in various applications, from drafting emails and writing articles to creating poetry and even generating programming code. It also demonstrated an ability to answer factual questions and translate between languages.

GPT 4 is the latest software for ChatGPT. Released in 2023, the latest iteration, continues this trend of exponential improvement, with changes like:

● Improved model alignment — the ability to follow user intention

● Lower likelihood of generating offensive or dangerous output

● Increased factual accuracy

● Better steerability — the ability to change behavior according to user requests

● Internet connectivity — the latest feature includes the ability to search the Internet in real-time

Each milestone brings us closer to a future where AI seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, enhancing our productivity, creativity, and communication.

How Did ChatGPT Gain Popularity?

ChatGPT quickly gained interest through word of mouth. It quickly spread through social media and news headlines. It blew up because this was one of its kind, no one has seen this type of technology yet.

And since it was available for a low price of 0.00 dollars, there was no risk of trying it. ChatGPT set records for the fastest growing website/app. According to The Guardian, ChatGPT gained 100 million visitors just 2 months after launch!

Bonus: Quillbot

Quilbot was released to the public 6 years before ChatGPT. It didn't succeed until ChatGPT’s success because people were using this GPT and QuillBot duo. People would use those two programs together, for a better experience, since QuillBot could summarize, change, and check for plagiarism with GPT’s text.
