Why I still look up

I thought I saw a moon shadow,

but it was the just the hallway light.

I thought I saw a magnificent sun beam!
but it was just a high-beam truck trundling by.

I thought I glimpsed the phosphorescent rocks
on the surface of the moon:
But was only the surveillance light flickering outside the living room.

I thought I saw Mars, Jupiter, Saturn high above the Western sky!
But was only the blinking of planes passing through the night.

So did all that I could.
I set up my telescope to catch the stars
far beyond the city lights
and peer above into the rich,
black night.
