Senator Heinrich learns the ropes of rooftop solar installation
One of NM’s leading lawmakers visits SunPower by Positive Energy Solar
Earlier this month, Senator Martin Heinrich paid a visit to a Positive Energy Solar job site in Santa Fe. But the Senator wasn’t there for handshakes or a policy speech — he showed up to learn the ins and outs of solar installation and to help with a rooftop solar project.
SunPower by Positive Energy Solar, an employee-owned New Mexico business, is widely recognized as one of the state’s leading homegrown clean energy firms.

Right now, the solar industry is one of the state’s principal economic bright spots. Nearly 3,000 New Mexicans work in the solar industry, and the number is rapidly increasing. Solar jobs provide strong wages, benefits, and workplace satisfaction.
There’s now upwards of 365 megawatts of solar capacity in New Mexico, or enough to power more than 83,000 homes. This growth is saving homeowners money and helping to protect our air and water.
It’s also making our state’s economy more competitive. This summer, Facebook announced the construction of a second $250 million facility at its Los Lunas project site, which will be powered with 100% renewable power. Leading employers know that sustainability isn’t a luxury but a necessity: Apple, Target, Johnson & Johnson, IKEA, and Costco are now all seeking to power their operations with solar.
Sen. Heinrich summarized the possibilities: “With our incredible potential for both solar and wind energy alongside innovative research and development at our national laboratories and universities, New Mexico is poised to become a major producer and exporter of clean power.” He explained further: “That will mean thousands of new jobs — from rural wind technicians to urban solar installers and maintenance workers.”
We agree.
We’re so pleased to see New Mexico’s leaders recognizing the powerful potential of solar.
