We have all heard of breakfast being the most important meal of the day. In actuality, each meal is important in helping you lose or and gain muscle. However, there is one meal that I feel gets overlooked and I believe this might be the most important meal. That is the post-workout meal. The post workout meal is what you eat after your workout. I’ll explain the importance of this meal in terms of gaining muscle and losing fat.

The main benefit of a post-workout meal is that it quickly helps your body to recover after you finished your weight lifting and/or cardio session. The post workout meal rapidly replenishes your body of all the nutrients your body exhausted during your training. In my opinion, it is important to eat your post-workout meal immediately when you get home. The reason for this is because the faster you eat that meal, the faster your body is going to recover, the faster your body will start building muscle, and the faster your body will burn fat. Recovery is very very very very important when you are trying to lose fat and/or gain muscle.

Ideally, your post workout meal should be a high protein and moderate to high carbs meal (protein should be 25–50 grams and carbs should also be 25–50 grams). The easiest way for me is to drink a protein shake with fruit in it or on the side (such as a banana or pineapple) or with oatmeal. I do it this way because it is more convenient for me (ok I am just too lazy to cook or microwave a meal after working out). However, an actual meal is always a great choice because you usually are very hungry after that intense training session. Some examples are chicken with rice or some fish with fruit on the side. Pretty much pick any source of protein that you choose (fish, eggs, chicken, beef…etc.) with carbs on the side (I prefer fruit after a workout because of the sugar that is in it, however, rice, beans, and oatmeal are also great options).

Although all meals are important, I felt it necessary to talk a little bit about the post-workout meal and the main reason why it is important. Therefore, don’t skip or delay your post workout meal because you want to quickly recover in order to lose fat and gain muscle and see that is it POSSIBLE to reach your fitness goal.
