One of the most well-known mining facility production companies in the market is The Bitfury Group. They say on their website that they are ‘the largest full-service blockchain technology company in the world’ and claim that their mining facility ‘Bitfury BlockBox AC‘ is one of the most powerful and cost-effective bitcoin mining units available on the market’. Their solution consumes a large amount of power — but does it create as equally impressive mining outcome? And are they cost-effective comparing to Power Mining’s MMU?
It is no surprise that Latvians are often proud of everything that comes from their small country. And, as a coincidence, the founders of companies Bitfury and Power Mining are both locals in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. While Bitfury has their offices and operations around the globe, Power Mining continues their production in Latvia and offers the MMU shipment to anywhere in the world.
While Bitfury at their BlockBox mine only with their own mining machines that are utilizing their own ASIC chips (they can, unfortunately, work only on the Bitcoin blockchain), Power Mining offers to use Bitmain’s Antminers or GPUs allowing customers to choose between mining various cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash, Monero, etc.

In order to compare the facilities, a calculation of how much would it cost to mine the same amount of hashing power that is produced by one Power Mining’s MMU, equal to 2.6PH/s, could be done. To be able to equalize the power consumption and the price of Bitfury’s facility to be the same level as the Power Mining’s MMU, a coefficient was used that is equal to the number of times the Power Mining’s facility produces a smaller amount of hash comparing to the Bitfurry’s solution: 2.6/8=0.325.
The table shows that in order to produce an equal amount of hash at both facilities, the Bitfury’s BlockBox AC consumes almost double the amount of power (0.39MW vs 0.27MW) and costs (excl. electricity costs) at almost double (390k $) the price of Power Mining’s MMU (207k $). To rephrase, Bitfury’s clients not only overpay for the mining facility but also spend more on electric power while mining.
In conclusion, it is up to you whom to believe — loud slogans or real numbers. It is also your choice if you prefer greater control and mobility over your mining facility or the ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution.
