Review: Shortz books are a good choice. I like that this book has 50 demanding and 150 Beware! Very Challenging puzzles. Does anyone know which books are all Beware! Very Challenging?

Title: Not Great for Too Many Reasons!

Review: This book is adequate. But the entire format is clumsy. First, it should be spiral bound, especially top spiral bound, not just for left-handers but for anyone. Since it isn’t, at the very least the interior margins should be offset so when you do a puzzle on the verso page you can see all of it, not have the last column folded in the crease. The paper is rough making it harder to erase and easier to erase the print — not good. The ink does smear a tad at times. (Mostly not noticeable) Large can be good but I find this book at 5"x7" too large: too big, too thick. It will not slip easily into a pocket to take with you.

All of the poor design elements mentioned above are NOT present in the Sudoku series by Chronicle Books. I bought this Will Shortz book because I have gone through the entire Chronicle Book series. And Shortz comes up Short, way short! Chronicle’s spiral binding with hard cardboard covers makes for excellent usability. The 3.75"x6" size fits in the palm of the hand, the back pocket, the shirt pocket, and is ideal for working a puzzle, vastly superior to the awkward Shortz 5"x7" size. The semi-slick paper handles numerous erasures (I can testify to that!) and the print never fades or smudges. Numerals in color contrasting to grid lines make it visually more appealing. And fainter grid lines outside the puzzle box make for a neater note area.

So far, I have only done a few puzzles in the first section of Shortz and the puzzles themselves seem adequate. Yet I will not buy another such book because this format takes the joy out of doing Sudoku.

UPDATE: A couple of weeks later I’ve done about 10% of the puzzles and I DISLIKE this book immensely! The newsprint allows for bleed through from the next page. The grid lines are too thick and too dark. Both of those ‘features’ contribute to inside grid notations being illegible and misread. I’ve dropped the rating from 3 stars to 2 and seriously considered giving this 1 star but I’m sure there are worse products out there.

UPDATE 2, And Another Thing: Because of the rough newsprint paper, eraser shavings do not easily or completely brush off, which can alter your reading of numbers that you note in squares as possibilities.

Review: I love the Will Shortz Sudoku books. I go for the more difficult puzzle collections. This book has 50 Demanding puzzles and 150 Beware! Very Challenging puzzles. These puzzles are more difficult than you will find in the newspaper so maybe not for the casual player, but neither are they so difficult as be discouraging. The puzzles are in large format written on good quality paper (unlike cheap magazine puzzles printed on poor quality newsprint) such that if you need to use a pencil, the pencil marks are clear and visible.

Review: I love Will Shortz Sudoko puzzles. One thing I have learned, is that there are really only two Sudoku folks that can put the game together without them being wrong. These puzzles are challenging (demanding to beware very challenging), which are the only ones I want to work anymore. There are no easy or moderate, which if you are into Sudoku, are not at all challenging. These are all perfect.
