I would like to share my experience of getting a marriage certificate in Telangana. If you didn’t know, the process is now seamless with online registration followed by payment of slot booking and visiting the Sub Registrar Office (SRO) near your place. The actual cost of processing the application is around Rs 250. Otherwise, the cost may go up to Rs 2500 due to corruption. There are two ways to apply for the marriage registration process:

a. Get a broker or any agent who deals with this process. He will charge you around 1500–2500 depending on the correctness of your documents. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to get the registration done in the SRO office.

b. Do it yourself. If all the documents are correct, you may not have to pay any bribe. Else, depending on the missing documents or any corrections, you may have to pay around Rs 1000.

Please follow the below steps to create an application online.

  1. Visit User Registration (telangana.gov.in) and create your account.
  2. If the above site doesn’t work due to invalid user credentials, use this alternative site User Registration (telangana.gov.in) This is a work around to sign up if the previous website doesn’t work.
  3. Once you go through the work around, try to login to the actual website.
  4. Once you login successfully you can now start the registration process over here.
  5. Enter all the required details over here.
  6. Make sure while filling up the application you enter your details as per your Aadhar (will tell you later why)
  7. Make sure bride and bridegroom address is entered fully as per Aadhar.
  8. Make sure you enter all the witness details as per Aadhar.
  9. Once you complete the application form, double check and submit.
  10. Please take a printout of this application for registering in SRO (actual headache start from here)
  11. Pay the registration fee and take a printout.

Once the online application is done, check the requirements listed here.

You need to submit the copies of your documents along with originals.

Bride

  1. Birth Certificate, copy with original for in place verification.
  2. 10th class marks sheet which has date of birth in case birth certificate is not available, copy with original.
  3. Aadhar, copy with original.
  4. Wedding Invitation, copy with original.
  5. Marriage Photos (2 no.) showing both family, bridegroom and bride (please get the print of the actual photograph)

Bridegroom

Witness

  1. Aadhar, copy with original for all three witnesses.
  2. Physical presence is required for all three witnesses with original Aadhar documents.

Common documents

  1. Registration receipt for the slot booking
  2. Application form, which is generated online, take a printout and keep it.

Sub Registrar Office visit

Once all the documents are ready, pin them together and go to the office with all three witnesses. Although the office opening time is 10:30 AM, officials come around 11:15 AM, and people will start forming a queue. The officer will review the documents and start looking for identifying mistakes (for bribe). Even though all of them are correct, they will force you to bring some or other related documents. If you are lucky and the documents are correct, he/she may proceed with the registration. Otherwise, it means that they are expecting a bribe and will let you know after further persuading.

Sub Registrar Office process i.e., physical visit

  1. Post presenting all the required documents, the officer will start registration online, he/she will print the final form and will ask you for any clarification or corrections.
  2. Once everything is fine, you have to take digital photographs for both bridegroom and bride in the same office.
  3. Once the photography is done, the photos will automatically appear in the final Marriage certificate.
  4. You may have to pay some bribe to the attender if asked outside the block as there are CC cameras.
  5. Once the final marriage certificate is ready take a xerox to submit back to the officer.
  6. You may leave the premises with the original certificate, that should be the end of the process.

I hope you have now understood the process of applying for marriage certificate and the whole process behind it.
