When Life Happens, Accidentally !

I never saw it coming. The next moment, I was in hospital getting plaster on my right leg. After looking into my X-Ray reports, the Doctor casually said Just one fracture. That’s all, nothing to worry. I was like Doc, Is this some kind of a joke ? Just one fracture. That’s like getting hit by a shoe wrapped in a blanket, a very famous Indian proverb. Thanks for bringing my worst dreams to reality.
Thanks a lot mate, you have just sanctioned me one month leave. I wanna hug you so hard. But you know what Doc, I cannot walk. You have to take efforts and leap towards me. Cause the very moment I envy the fact you can walk and I can’t.
It was an unplanned trip, a hormonal surge which kicked inside us, The Roommates. Couple of hours before Midnight on Friday, we come up with a plan to do a road-trip to a beach called Harihareshwar, around 180 kms from our place, Pune. It was a weekend, an extended one with a day off on upcoming Monday. A trip for which we were planning to leave at around 4 am.
We hardly slept for the night. First we planned not to sleep, as living with working bachelors, you cannot imagine waking up that early. There has to be a stronger than the strongest motivation for us to wake up that early. Also waking up after sleeping at around 1 or 2 am at night. Just 2 hours sleep, Are you fucking kidding me?
I thought we are never gonna make it. Ultimately we would end up spending our weekend as usual, doing nothing.
But we did. One of my most enthusiastic friend, woke up about time. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the whole road trip was his idea . There he goes kicking our ass off to wake up and get ready.
It was summer time, but it was still cold outside. During summer, the day is really hot in India, but the night are somewhat cooler. But you don’t need a jacket or coat to go on for a ride even at wee hours, the breeze outside is soothing. But that was the direst mistake we made that day. We failed to anticipate the fact that our journey involves mountains and dense forest areas.
Next we were driving at max 20 km/hr, sun was not up yet. It was freaking cold outside, the temperature was easily penetrating our skin, as knife does a piece of butter, giving chills down our bones. My chattering teeth could have ground my tongue if I were to start a conversation with my friend riding with me. We have to take breaks at every 20 minutes. It felt like its not summer anymore, the season also had mood swings issues. All we wished was some mercy in form of warmth.
We finally saw some light, we never missed sun so much what we did that day. The cool air was getting little bit warmer and our bike speed was increasing proportional to that. We finally made it to beach at around 9 am. We could have reached early. But 9 am was not bad at all, given the hardship we went through. We had our breakfast, then we headed towards the beach. We played in sand and basically it turned out to be mud. We bathed afterwards and headed towards another nearest beach in search of stay and good food.
After visiting another beach and having delicious dinner, we headed back to our base next morning. But this time we didn’t made a mistake to start early, as we knew we are lacking the right arsenal to tackle the bloody weather. We rode our bike with great speeds and we were covering distance pretty quickly than before. We were happy that our long weekend trip was a success. But destiny had planned something else, for us.
We were driving in the hilly roads ups and downs. I was driving ahead of my friends. There was a turn, where all the shit happened. A car from nowhere came in front of us from opposite direction. The car driver while taking a turn in a process has came way off his road and entered our lane.
The roads were not that wide, but not narrow either. Two vehicles could comfortably drive. That car dashed us from side on my right leg. I tried to pull my bike as far as I could from not getting hit, but also keeping an eye on my left side, which has a steep ditch which was a fatal option. I had to make a choice and had to make it quick, at every instant my choices were fading.
The driver was really out of his senses and going to nearly ram us head on. I manage to stop the bike at some distance after the impact, but my right leg got hurt in the process and was bleeding. Also my friend who was sitting behind me, majorly balanced the shaking bike after the impact, by putting his right leg on ground. He took most of the impact, which we realized later.
The car driver realizing it was his mistake fled the spot and drove away to save his ass. We were not in a condition to note his registration number. It took us a while to come to our senses, to digest the fact we have been hit. It was better getting away with injuries than dead.
After the doctor’s diagnosis, one my dear friend who brought me to the hospital was standing beside the doctor. Doctor was unaware of the fact that, my friend could also read the report like a pro. No he is not a doctor, but the glance he was giving to my X-Ray reports, he was none less.
But what blow the next moment was going to deliver, nobody saw it coming. Even the Doctor was taken aback by my friends skills of reading report, even better than him. He said to doctor “ Doctor I think there are two fractures, as I can see there”, while pointing on some specific portion of the report. Doctor first take a good look over my friend and then back to the report.
Doctor confirmed that eventually my friend was absolutely right. It was real shame for a professional, if some guy from nowhere just made a mockery of your credentials, something you’ve been practicing for almost more than 10–15 years, you made an error. But Doctor seem to be shameless, not an ounce of shame on his face. He didn’t mind getting corrected. It was really casual for him.
I was perplexed. I was like, should I praise my friend’s intelligence or should I get worried as I just broke my leg in two places. This seems like an upgrade. Sometimes you feel lucky, when you get discount coupons applied automatically on your purchase. This is the only time when you won’t appreciate the upgrade. Sometimes knowing is more painful than not knowing at all.
So my other friend who was in more pain than I was, also went through X-Ray examination. The reports showed no fractures or injuries. Cause destiny has something big for him coming.
Two days later it was revealed after the MRI scans, its a ligament tear. We were all in shock, that is more dreadful than getting a fracture. More recovery time and worse if it requires a surgery.
Although the good part is my friend got away with one month unpaid leave, but he also got 6 months of unnecessary pain with it. I got few weeks break from office and work from home until I can walk without support.
Time flies by, we both are in our way to recovery. We have majorly recovered from the injuries. This free time has let us think about life and other real priorities of life. Things that really mattered in life, which would have taken even more years for us to realize.
I never got so much time to read books and get back to things I always wanted to do, which I couldn’t due to lack of time and of course which didn’t involve healthy pair of legs. This break was much needed, as I have learned to be more patient. Perks of having a broken leg, time off and lots of sympathy :)
